United Lofts – Atlanta
Previously a school for the church next door, this project demonstrates how historic buildings can be preserved through adaptive reuse. Existing classrooms walls and ceilings were gutted and fully renovated to provide a residential development consisting of ground level parking and one bedroom units with additional one and two bedrooms units on the second and third floors.
The connection between the church and the school served as the main entry to the buildings at the rear of the structures. This fully glazed element contained charming concrete breezeblocks which were left in place on the southern portion of the building, while the north side got a decorative glass exit stair.
The United Lofts project serves as an example of the national and local trend whereby religious institutions are choosing to partner with the development community to enhance congregation coffers and provide for the adaptive reuse of underutilized sites and /or structures.
